MINI-REVIEWS #145-147: Charmed Thirds, Fourth Comings, & Perfect Fifths (Jessica Darling #3,4,5) by Megan McCafferty

Charmed Thirds
This was probably my least favorite of the series.  I wanted more out of the Jessica-Marcus dynamic; I understand college relationship are hard and McCafferty did not let them get away without their road bumps, but I was not a fan. Jessica's choices were rather questionable and out there.  Her overall mood and thought process in this book drove me a bit crazy.   I continue to love the secondary characters; Bridget and her other HS friends continue their antics.  The wit and the sarcasm stays strong through the third books as well. I would have to give it 3 stars simply because Jessica bugged me a bit.

Fourth Comings
"But what is love but the most extreme and exquisite form of risk perception"
Having graduated a couple years ago this book (and the next one) are two of my favorites.  I was able to relate to starting real life and some of the emotions and struggles Jessica was going through.  Since Jessica and Hope are roommates we get a lot more from their friendship.  Hope is not one of my favorite secondary characters but as a character she is well developed and forces a different dynamic out of Jessica.  As for the romance... HOLY MOLY.  DRAMA.  I was not expecting that.  Jessica takes her journal writing to a different approach, she now write TO Marcus.  I actually think I enjoyed the change in writing style, it gave a subtle change to her witty style and shifted the story about since the journals now had an audience.   McCafferty not only continues include Jessica's friends in the story but also her family; I love Jessica's dynamic with her niece Merin and the always changing nature of her parents.  Fourth Comings was a solid step up from the 3rd book, the humor, the writing style, and overall character building was GREAT.

Perfect Fifths
Perfect Fifths was perfect.   Marcus and Jessica run into each other at the airport; Jessica is running late for a flight.  Marcus and Jessica's conversations were slow (not in a bad way at all) and built up to meaningful real conversations.  McCafferty's ability to write just shined in this book.  There was a section of just haiku poems that alternated between Marcus and Jessica.   There love is truly never ending even when they were not together and it was so evident.  This book focused completely on Marcus and Jessica.  It completed the story in the most beautiful way.  I absolutely recommend this series, the books flew by.  The writing style is different than most books and there is never ending humor and sarcasm.  The Marcus-Jessica love story is simply epic.   Not only to they both grow as characters, so does Jessica's family and friends.  It is hard not to become invested in their crazy lives as all the characters grow up, learn, change and start their future lives.

  1. I remember loving the first two books but not the third and then I think I bought the fourth book but never read it for some reason. I think I'll have to find it and read it now (and then read the fifth). Glad to hear you enjoyed the last book so much! ~Pam

  2. Reading your thoughts on the series make me want to do a re-read. I haven't done one yet. I only read these in the last two years, and I think I felt the same way about book 3. I guess that's bound to happen in a series like this.

And Book 5? I balled my eyes out on a train when I read it. So amazing. Marcus and Jessica are prob my favorite book couple.
