Summary from Goodreads:
In 1930s Munich, danger lurks behind dark corners, and secrets are buried deep within the city. But Gretchen Müller, who grew up in the National Socialist Party under the wing of her "uncle" Dolf, has been shielded from that side of society ever since her father traded his life for Dolf's, and Gretchen is his favorite, his pet.

Uncle Dolf is none other than Adolf Hitler.

And Gretchen follows his every command.

Until she meets a fearless and handsome young Jewish reporter named Daniel Cohen. Gretchen should despise Daniel, yet she can't stop herself from listening to his story: that her father, the adored Nazi martyr, was actually murdered by an unknown comrade. She also can't help the fierce attraction brewing between them, despite everything she's been taught to believe about Jews.

As Gretchen investigates the very people she's always considered friends, she must decide where her loyalties lie. Will she choose the safety of her former life as a Nazi darling, or will she dare to dig up the truth—even if it could get her and Daniel killed?

Review

Prisoner of Night & Fog isn't your typical WWII story. It takes place in the early 1930s during Hitler's rise to power and is told from the POV of a girl who grew up with "Uncle Dolf" as a loving father figure. Moreover, a fictitious murder is weaved around real events in history, and the primary plot focus. Although I wouldn't know any better, having only a basic knowledge of WWII, Blankman's story felt authentic and well-researched.

It was really interesting, while also discomforting, to read from the POV of "Hitler's pet". In the beginning of the book, Gretchen shares Hitler's negative opinions of the Jews and her these thoughts and her habit to defend Uncle Dolf are not easy to shed. But while investigating her father's murder Gretchen learns that the Jews are not the enemy she was raised to believe they were and the people she thought she could count on are perhaps the real monsters. She experienced tremendous growth over the course of this book.

Being fascinated with History as I am, Historical Fiction novels always pull me in for the history lesson alone. But I further enjoyed the unique perspective Blankman provides through Gretchen, the mystery surrounding her father's murder, and the focus on the early days of Nazi Germany. However, I felt a little lukewarm over the characters and the romance. The plot and setting was what carried this for me, it was well-paced and transfixing.

If you are a fan of Historical Fiction, murder mysteries and a unique perspective, I'd definitely recommend you give this one a try.

I agree with you - make it good. It's not that I found the romance bad, I just didn't swoon over Daniel or feel and strong feelings about the pair of them. They aren't a power couple like Rose and Dimitri or Lela and Malachi (have you read Sanctum? - You should) if you catch my drift. And same goes for Gretchen, she isn't unlikable or anything but she's not full of personality that makes her stand out to me. (I just felt like I needed to clarify that).

It was a little unsettling but it was interesting to see how Hitler influenced people. starting with those closest to him. those "young impressionable minds"
I was really interested in this book because of the perspective! I think the one of Gretchen is not a view that many authors dare to take on with books set during WWII and while it's also really uncomfortable for me to say that this is a drawing point for me, it definitely is! I'm curious to see Gretchen's development as a character. Happy that you enjoyed this book! It sounds really good!

I agree, I have not seen this angle taken before and that is what initially drew me to this book.I like to seek out different perspectives, as unsettling as they might be. It's good to see the other side of things that challenge the way we think. I can't say I fully understand how something so horrifying as the Holocaust came to be, but this book definitely explains a little bit about Germany and its people at that time and how Hitler influenced them.
Do you know that when I go visit blogs, I have Amazon opened on another screen? On the off chance that I'll find something interesting to read, having it open is quite convenient. Lol.

I literally just pre-ordered this (Yes, I know it comes out tomorrow).

Great review, Nicole. I'm excited to read it. I'm curious to see how this book would make me feel.

Whoa, that is dangerous of you Joy! I would buy all the books if I did the same :)

I hope you like it! I will keep my eye out for your review!
Great review! I totally gave this one 5 unicorns, I loved it that much! I find it interesting that you didn't dig the characters or the romance. I loved them. Well, maybe not all of them, that brother was pretty awful and Hitler and his men. I can't wait till the next book!

Gah Reinhard. I am glad he got what he deserved. I hated him enough because of how he treated Gretchen but I started hoping for his death after he killed that cat.

And I didn't not like Gretchen or Daniel (or the pair of them), I just mean they didn't bring out any strong feels. I felt a little indifferent.
Just reviewed this one on my own blog yesterday too! I have to say that I gave it the same rating, though I enjoyed the characters and the romance. My issue was more with the plot. I kinda wanna talk to you now because we have the same rating for different reasons! Interesting :o

haha so we were opposite of each other! It's not that i didn't like Gretchen or Daniel, they just didn't stand out to me. I was neutral to them. The plot and setting was what really kept my interest/brought the feels. What didn't you like about the plot?
I do enjoy Historical Fiction, I just don't read it nearly enough. This book sounds very unique and I want to read it just to see how Hitler is portrayed (although it will I'm sure drive me crazy) and how this girl grows. Thanks again for making my TBR list grow. haha

If you are going to start diving into Historical Fiction, I might have books I'd recommend over this one, but for this subject matter, this is pretty solid.

I haven't read too much historical fiction, but I do like the idea of this one. What a different MC to tell this story, I like that. But you feeling lukewarm about the characters and the romance…that's the most important thing for me, I don't know if the plot and setting can make up for that. I'm on the fence about this one right now.

There is nothing wrong with Gretchen or Daniel, there is just nothing particularly memorable about them or their relationship (in my opinion). But we've differed before in this regard so you should give it a shot! Although it's a series and I know you are trying to cut down on those...
