Top Ten Classics We Want to Read

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week's Top Ten list is
"Ten Ten Classics We Want to Read"
(are these Classics?)

Nicole's Top Five

Truthfully, I'm not a big reader of Classics. But if I were to pick one up, these are the top 5 on my list.

1. 1984 - I have tried reading this book a couple times already, although not very hard. I'd like to read it some day and see what Orwell predicted about the future and how close he was. Besides, it's supposed to be a good story. I own it somewhere...
2. The Catcher in the Rye - I feel like just about everyone has read this book so I want to join the club.
3. Catch-22 - Don't ask me what I read in High School because I haven't read this either. This is another one that I feel is really popular and it is necessary for me to read.
4. Gone With the Wind - This is one of my favorite movies and yet I haven't read the book. That is like a sin in the book world.
5. Nicholas and Alexandra - My mother adores this book. She actually has this musty old copy stored somewhere in our basement. Not only would it make my mother happy if I read this, but I also happen to be obsessed with Imperial Russia so I imagine I will like it.

Ashley's Top Five

1. 1984 - I agree with Nicole on wanting to read this one.  I have never actually tried but I hear so many references to it that I feel like I need to get to it.
2. Animal Farm- Another classic that I feel like I should eventually read.
3. Pride and Predijuce- I loved the movies and have seen them multiple times but never have actually read the book cover to cover before.
4. Dracula - I read the abridged children's classic version of this one and remember really enjoying it so I would love to give the real version a try
5.To Kill a Mocking Bird- I have read this one before in high school and absolutely loved it but I would like to reread this classic.

What are your top ten?

Nicole, you have to read Gone With the Wind…it is amazing! It made my Top Ten list today. I have read that book multiple times and I own multiple copies. I dragged my husband to see the movie when we were dating (it was playing at a small theater in Atlanta, which is where we were at the time) because I couldn't believe he grew up in GA and hadn't seen it. Basically, I'm obsessed with that book. And The Catcher in the Rye, loved that book too.

Pride and Prejudice…one of my all time favorite books, I try to read it once a year. I also love the movies, but my favorite version is the BBC version with Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy.

1984 sounds really good. I think you should give it another chance. I can't wait to read it.

Animal Farm is another one I've heard amazing things about that I will probably read one day.

Great picks!

Be warned, 1984 is depressing. It's essential to read, I think, but follow it up with something fluffy and happy!

I really enjoyed 1984. As for Gone With the Wind...I love the movie too and I have yet to read the book. :/

Great list. The Catcher in the Rye and Pride and Prejudice are great. I have not read 1984 yet, but I would love to soon. To Kill a Mockingbird is a book that sticks with you long after you read it.

Oh, man. You have to read To Kill a Mockingbird and Dracula! Both are great for different reasons. :)

I would definitely recommend George Orwell (especially 1984) and TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. And I want to read GONE WITH THE WIND, too! I don't want to watch the movie until I read the book first!

I tried to read Gone with the Wind in high school, and got pretty far, but ended up setting it and never picking it back up. It is jam packed full of descriptions and that's really not my cup of tea, though I really want to finish it one day.

P&P is just everything to me. I adore it beyond reason, and I know it cliche, but it's my favorite book.
I loved TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD! I need to get my hands on a copy of it. Happy reading!

Ashley, I agree with #3 except I watched the sappy 2005 version with Keira Knightly so many times from the moment I hit puberty up until I was like 17. I watched the 1996 mini-series version of it once between semesters of the past school year with my family. I may be the only one to not read a book, I'll try.
