Sometimes discovering the truth can leave you more hopeless than believing the lies…

That’s what seventeen-year-old Sky realizes after she meets Dean Holder. A guy with a reputation that rivals her own and an uncanny ability to invoke feelings in her she’s never had before. He terrifies her and captivates her all in the span of just one encounter, and something about the way he makes her feel sparks buried memories from a past that she wishes could just stay buried.

Sky struggles to keep him at a distance knowing he’s nothing but trouble, but Holder insists on learning everything about her. After finally caving to his unwavering pursuit, Sky soon finds that Holder isn’t at all who he’s been claiming to be. When the secrets he’s been keeping are finally revealed, every single facet of Sky’s life will change forever.

Review

Was I reading the same book as everyone else? Because there are an overwhelming amount of glowing reviews for this book and I just don’t understand it. At all.

Holder is not likeable. Maybe Holder was a good guy in the last 1/4 of the book but what about the first 3/4? I don’t care that his most controversial behavior is explained in the end, it is not at all excusable or justified. He was temperamental, invasive, controlling, insulting, selfish, threatening and unpredictable. His behavior was so off-putting to me that “off-putting” is putting it mildly. How is it ok to show aggression toward a girl, stop talking to her for weeks with no explanation, and then CLIMB IN HER BEDROOM WINDOW IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT. Not to apologize. He didn’t want Sky to forgive him (he said this). He just needed her to need him there more than she needed an apology (he said this too). This is just one example. Excuse me while I go throw up in my mouth.

I like Sky only slightly better than I do Holder. I have no respect for her because she has no respect for herself. And that has nothing to do with the several boys she lets take advantage of her (although that certainly doesn’t help) and everything to do with how she is so accepting/forgiving of Holder when he gives her every reason not to be. She admits to being TERRIFIED of him on SEVERAL occasions and yet she lets him continue to control her. And I thought that she acted pretty irrationally, selfishly, and without thought in the second half of the book. I understand the horribleness of her situation and I am not trying to be insensitive, but I’ve read books involving sensitive subjects and they were handled much better than this.

Now I am not going to say this book was ALL bad. I liked the friendship between Six and Sky. I think Breckin was awesomesauce. And I think Karen was a really good parent to Sky. There were some good lines in this. And the ending wasn’t terrible. Then again I could have been misplacing my glee over finally finishing this book. That is the extent of the things I liked. And sadly, the things I didn’t like totally overshadowed them.

So no, I don’t think I can recommend this book. There are so many books either of the contemporary, swoony boy, and/or sensitive issue variety that are better than this one in my opinion. Then again, I seem to be a black sheep.

And for the record, There were an awful lot of panty dropping references for a girl who considers herself a virgin and a book involving child molestation. Just saying.

Woaaah. You are BOLD. :) I really liked this book and I loved DEAN HOLDER!!! I gotta say though--- I love that you didn't enjoy it. I always find it fascinating when someone really dislikes a book that most people love!! That is how I felt about Easy by Tammara Webber. I think I'm the ONLY ONE that hated it and hated Lucas. I do find your thoughts interesting and I kind of want to reread it now and see why you felt the way you did! <3

Uh oh. That makes me scared to read Easy! I hate being the black sheep, I really do. It's always a little discomforting feeling the complete opposite of everyone else. But it happens I guess.

If you do reread this one I'd be curious to hear your thoughts now that I've pointed out what I hated about it hah.

"And the ending wasn’t terrible. Then again I could have been misplacing my glee over finally finishing this book." Ok, that made me laugh.

I totally understand your review. I think I gave this 4 stars or something when I read it but I sometimes tend to rate books based on how they are compared to other books in that genre. So for me, that's NA. Which I'm not too impressed with. I would have to say, though, I really liked Easy a lot more than this one. I'm curious as to what your reaction to that one will be. Have you read Beautiful Disaster? If you hated Holder, you will despise that MC guy (I forget his name). He is a complete and utter psycho.

Oh goodness, I am going to avoid Beautiful Disaster like the plague now.
I don't know what I am going to do about Easy. Is Lucas anything like Holder?

I haven't really ventured into the NA genre much. The only book that is coming to mind that I know was NA was Left Drowning, and I did really like that one - although a solid like 100-150 pages of that book was just sex. But if there is a trend of Holder-like boys I have a feeling I am not going to be a fan.

No, Lucas is not like Holder so that's why I recommend it. Have you read Flat-Out Love? It's by Jessica Park (who wrote Left Drowning) and I guess technically it's NA since the MCs are college-age, but it is not the typical damaged characters. A totally different NA story. I definitely recommend that one, you should read it and let me know your thoughts.

Thumbs up for Flat-Out Love. :-)

I will try Flat Out Love next then I think! And then Easy if that goes well. Thanks for the recs!
Beautiful Disaster ... you will NOT like it. Travis Maddox is hot in the first part then gets creepily obsessive, possessive, and CRAZY.

Ugh WHY. Why do authors create creepy stalker boys :( I am definitely not reading this one. Thanks for the heads up!
So...I'm not sure I was every going to read this book, I think it was just a maybe read, but now I for sure won't read this book. I'm just not in the mood to read about someone that is that horrible to other people. I mean if I was legit terrified of someone I wouldn't want to be with them, just saying. I just finished reading Obsidian, and that guy in the book a class A jerk and I wasn't a fan, even though everyone else seems to love him. So you aren't alone, I too read a book that everyone seems to love and I'm in the minority.

Yeah I've heard the guy in Obsidian is a jerk, I don't plan on reading that book. I just don't get it with these boys ...
I think I will probably stay away from this :/ It doesn't look very appealing and the MC is desperately in need of some backbone. I have absolutely no tolerance for characters that are so weak-minded and let everyone walk all over her. Even if she did suffer from some sort of traumas

I have very low patience for characters like that too AND these guys. And her trauma isn't even an excuse because she doesn't even recall it until the end. It's just her personality hah.
Oh wow. You didn't like it? *sad panda face*

Kidding. We can't all love the same books, and I certainly see your point about a lot of things you mentioned. Holder, specifically was a character that took a lot of my patience while i was getting to know him. I'm so sad you didn't enjoy this. Sigh.

I can admit that he was good in the last third(ish) of the book but I was too mad at him and Sky by that point that it didn't matter. I couldn't get over that they shouldn't have even gotten to that point for me to forgive him. :(
I've never read this one, but I can tell that it wouldn't be for me. I honestly tend to shy away from NA genre completely--because the guys always seem to be scary, controlling dudes and I just don't find that enjoyable at all. I hope your next read is much, much better. Great review!

I don't read much NA too but I won't like this trend either if it continues. Hopefully I can read around it hah.
I am sorry :( But you said it perfectly, we don't all read things the same way. I am glad you loved it, even if I didn't. Thanks for not hating me for bashing it haha.

And yes, I have sworn off Beautiful Disaster!! I won't put myself through that.
All I have to say is I AM SO HAPPY SOMEONE ELSE HATED THIS. It's not that I'm happy you hate it, it makes me feel a little bit better to know I wasn't the only one who was dumbfounded as to why this book has so much hype and love behind it. lol
