As First Daughter, she is expected to have the revered gift of sight—but she doesn’t—and she knows her parents are perpetrating a sham when they arrange her marriage to secure an alliance with a neighboring kingdom—to a prince she has never met.

On the morning of her wedding, Lia flees to a distant village. She settles into a new life, hopeful when two mysterious and handsome strangers arrive—and unaware that one is the jilted prince and the other an assassin sent to kill her. Deception abounds, and Lia finds herself on the brink of unlocking perilous secrets—even as she finds herself falling in love.

Review

Hot damn this book was GOOD.

Lia flees her kingdom and duties as princess to escape an arranged marriage. She settles in a distant village and shortly thereafter two strangers arrive - one who is the prince she fled from, the other, an assassin sent to kill her and prevent the alliance her marriage would create. Lia doesn't know the true identity of either, of course, and neither do readers. All we know is that there is a man named Raffe and a man named Kaden, one is the prince, one is the assassin. And Lia's un-princess-like behavior surprises both men, which motivates them to extend their stay and get to know her. Both vie for her attention, and Lia starts to form attachments to each of them, though one more than the other.

I have never read a story told this way and I freaking loved it. Not knowing who was who but knowing that one of them wanted needed to kill her created a whole new layer of suspense and intrigue. The first 300 pages or so take place more or less in the village and are focused on the growing relationship between Lia and these two men. After that, things get even more interesting. I really couldn't read fast enough. I devoured this book.

As great as the plot was, the characters were even better.  I loved Lia - her stubbornness, defiance, willpower, discipline, strength, compassion. She was fierce and intelligent. Everything I could hope for in a female lead. A true warrior. AND THESE MEN! Both of these men were swoon worthy to some degree. Both were handsome, capable, honorable, dangerous, complex, and willing to fight for Lia. There was a bit of healthy competition between them over Lia and I ate it up. The dynamic that Pearson created was irresistible. But don't worry love triangle haters, Lia clearly prefers one over the other. Meanwhile, the secondary characters were just as strong, all with their own stories and admirable qualities. Such a wonderful cast of characters all around.

I can't recommend this book enough. But if I can leave you with a piece of advice, don't try and guess who is who! I thought I was supposed to know but was just dense so I used context clues in the beginning to figure out who was the prince and who was the assassin AND I WAS WRONG. So yeah, I had a bit of a surprise at page 303 and had to realign myself.

Really, I loved this one. It is easily a new favorite!

One of the best love triangles I've ever read! And like you, I was completely wrong with who was who. It took me quite a few chapters to readjust, because I had clear pictures in my head that obviously weren't right. Everything about this book was perfection. I didn't find one thing I hated. It was just so wonderfully written that I'm wishing I hadn't read it so early because now I have to wait a long time for the sequel! UGH.

I loved this one too (I actually posted my review on Monday). Now that I know who is who, it makes me want to re-read it so I know who did what, who was saying what, etc. Agree with your review 100%, this was one of my favorites, just so well done. Can't wait for the next one!!!

I want to reread too! I probably will before the next book comes out since we have to wait SO LONG.
This is the second 5 star review I've read for this book in the last 5 minutes. I think that means that I'm going to have pick it up earlier than I intended to.

I'm so intrigued by your second to last paragraph. Can't wait to read this to see what it means!

You should definitely read this sooner rather than later! And then we can talk about that second to last paragraph ;)
What? A new favorite?! I think I need to read this one. I had sort of wrote it off as another princess book that I might get around to, but you don't know who is who? That's a brilliant plot device! I'm excited now!

I hope you love it as much as I did!
Kingdom, Princess, Assassin: those are the words someone has to say to make me excited, haha. The guys sound a bit like the love-triangle in Throne of glass! I also think I will really like Lia, because I always look for MC's with such personality traits. I'm so happy I have an eARC for this book waiting for me. Awesome review :D

OMG! YES! This book sounds freaking awesome. Not knowing who is the prince and who is the assassin? Sign me up right now. I am getting this book when it comes out. No joke. And both guys are swoon worthy and Lia sounds like a strong MC and you gave it five stars. **Hurries off to place a hold on this book at the library just in case I don't get a chance to purchase it first.**

So glad you loved it!! I felt like the beginning started out a little slow for me and was TOTALLY surprised by the.. well, surprise haha. I honestly thought I had read the book wrong because I didn't know it was a twist! I had just assumed OOPS. Great review! Lovely enthusiasm! I loved the second half and am really excited for book two!

I'm glad you loved this book as much as I do :) I loved the beautiful writing and especially enjoyed how we didn't know who was the prince and who was the assassin, it was fun guessing! I really enjoyed how the book was almost two stories: one more fantasy-esque and romantic and small town-y while the other was more journey/traveling and adventure. It went together quite well and oh darn that ending... I WANT MORE. Anyway, wonderful review! New follower <3
