Review
Kody Keplinger's Lying Out Loud is a fantastic companion novel to the DUFF. By no means though, feel like it is necessary to read The DUFF prior to picking up LOL. The main character, Sonny, has a best friend who happens to be the younger sister of one of the central characters of The DUFF. LOL has a very similar feel and pace.Sony has a serious lying problem, she lies about everything to just about everyone. She lies about the most trivial things to very deep underlying issues she is facing. She is full of secrets which truly keep all those that care about her at arms length. The lies she tells weave a complicated web, which is where the heart of the plot lays. Similar to its companion, the story focuses on inner character reflection while also blending in friendships and a well paced romance. Friendships can go through struggles and complicated situations; I admire Keplinger for not shying away from the ups and downs that can occur in friendships. While the book does tackle some deeper issues, I felt as though there was an excellent balance between serious and entertaining moments.
LOL is a strong character driven story focusing on the growth and change Sony goes through. It has strong friendships, honest and believable high school situations, and new romances. If you enjoyed the DUFF, I urge you to pick up this entertaining and at times tough to read contemporary book.
